PUBLIC POLICY

LAUW ensures that the United Way’s voice is heard on the important issues confronting state and federal government, speaking as one voice for its members.   LAUW continues to serve with a coalition of strong advocates to advance an agenda that we believe will serve the best interest of Louisiana’s children and families. The Louisiana Association of Nonprofit Organizations (LANO) partners with LAUW to advocate and lobby Louisiana elected officials on issues of concern to the nonprofit sector and the citizens of Louisiana; discuss nonprofit organizational effectiveness; public awareness and support of the sector; advocacy and grassroots community activities; and successful collaboration.

Public policy and advocacy have been, and continues to be, a central activity for LAUW particularly for those issues and positions that relate to local United Ways' community building and fundraising activities.  These issues and priorities are reflective of work that is key to the capacity of United Ways to meet the human care needs of their communities, and where our active involvement along with key partners can result in sustained and positive change.

LAUW successfully championed legislation that ensures High Quality Childcare Standards, School Readiness Tax Credits, the establishment of the Child Poverty Prevention Council and the first ever refundable Earned Income Tax Credit in the South.
